By Leah Sugerman, yoga teacher
Yoga, above all else, is a practice of balance: a balance between effort and ease, a balance between strength and flexibility, a balance between power and surrender, a balance between yin and yang, and a balance between practice and theory. So, above all else, my classes manifest as practices of yoga for balance.
Yes, sometimes that means balancing in Tree Pose, but more often than not, it means balancing internally. My classes focus on balancing energy centers and chakras, balancing thoughts, temperaments, breath, reactions—balancing physically, but mostly, balancing mentally.
A Balanced Mind Through Meditation
My teachings and my personal practice are both firmly rooted in a pursuit of balance—or at least striving toward equanimity. Meditation and the physical asana practice both emphasize yoga for balance in many different ways.
My meditation teachings are simple and open-ended. I invite my students to explore the inner workings of their own minds—to become observers of their thoughts and thought patterns. This exploration helps cultivate an understanding of how the mind works, leading to both control and surrender. The outcome? A more balanced relationship with oneself.
Physical Balance, Emotional Growth
My asana classes place equal emphasis on balance. I offer many balancing postures (as most yoga classes do) to build strength, power, and—yes—balance in the physical body. But those physical shifts ripple outward. They evolve into emotional and spiritual balance in many different ways, whether we recognize that transformation or not.
Tiffany Cruikshank eloquently expresses this shift: “Yoga is a powerful vehicle for change. As you build strength, you start to believe in your own potential.” This quote encapsulates the essence of yoga for balance—it’s not just about standing on one leg; it’s about grounding yourself in all aspects of your life.
A Precise Approach to Alignment and Energy
My teachings are very precise. I carefully instruct the alignment of the body to promote a healthy physical practice. But beyond the body, I continuously invite students to explore how their minds respond to certain postures—or even the holding of a posture. How does the breath fluctuate? What thoughts arise?
This ongoing awareness helps students work toward equanimity in movement, breath, and thought. It’s all part of the journey of practicing yoga for balance in every sense.
Working With the Chakras for Balance
Balancing the seven major chakras is a profound way to move toward physical, mental, and emotional equilibrium. These energy centers stretch from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, and they correspond to key physical, emotional, and spiritual elements of the self. Any imbalance, blockage, or overactivity in these chakras can lead to instability.
A well-rounded yoga practice can target these chakras through focused asana, breathwork, and meditation techniques. By connecting each pose and breath to the intention of harmonizing the energy centers, we embody the true essence of yoga for balance.
Daily Practices That Cultivate Balance
Each day can begin with deeply restorative, peace-invoking meditation—tapping into different methods until you find what works for you. Add pranayama (breathwork) to either ignite or soothe your energy, depending on what the moment calls for.
A physical asana practice, especially one that synchronizes breath with movement, helps align the body and stimulate different energy centers. A strong but accessible Vinyasa Flow awakens the body and mind, while evening Yin yoga offers release and recovery—both essential elements of yoga for balance.
Awakening the Inner Energy
With a consistent practice focused on the chakras, we begin to awaken the Kundalini energy that lies dormant in many of us. This awakening invites energy to move freely through our physical, mental, and emotional bodies, helping us connect to a deeper sense of self.
This kind of energy flow, facilitated by regular yoga and meditation practice, is the very embodiment of yoga for balance. It’s not about perfection—it’s about alignment, attention, and presence.
Finding Your Own Sense of Balance
The practice of yoga and meditation is an ongoing dance of balance—continuously evolving and adapting. As we work with various techniques, postures, breath patterns, and meditation styles, we move closer to a state of equilibrium.
Through energizing and clearing the seven major chakras, we can find greater harmony in body, mind, and soul. Whether you’re seeking physical grounding, emotional steadiness, or mental clarity, yoga for balance offers a path to greater well-being. And the best part? It’s a practice that meets you exactly where you are—and invites you to grow from there.
